Legal Requirements for International Destination Weddings

Different countries have completely different rules about who can get married there and what paperwork they want to see first. And if you're an Indian couple marrying abroad, there's usually a bit more on that list than you'd expect.

Passports, birth certificates, single-status certificates, apostilled documents, none of this is glamorous, but skipping it is how couples end up with a beautiful ceremony and zero legal marriage to show for it. So let's actually go through what you'll likely need, one by one, so nothing catches you off guard three weeks before your flight.

1. Valid Passport

Start here, obviously. But don't just check that it's not expired; check how much validity is left. A lot of countries want at least 6 months remaining, sometimes more, and some want a certain number of blank pages too. “It’s valid until after the wedding.” Sounds reassuring, until an expired passport has already derailed more travel plans than people care to admit.

2. Birth Certificate

This one proves who you are and when you were born. Sounds basic, right? But some countries can be surprisingly particular about the format. They may ask for the original or a certified copy rather than a photocopy or a PDF you printed at home five minutes before leaving for the airport.
